Triumphing with the grand prize at the 2024 ANDAM in June certainly marked a significant milestone for Australian designer Christopher Esber. However, he conveyed a sense of urgency and responsibility that prevented him from resting on his achievements.
Expressing this sentiment backstage, prior to unveiling his spring collection—which represents the second show he’s orchestrated in the vibrant city of Paris—Esber acknowledged the immense pressure to produce something truly remarkable.
The show commenced with a striking black dress characterized by a nearly sheer bodice and elegantly draped skirt, artfully designed to ultimately contour the shoulders. This was just one of the standout pieces presented to the esteemed panel of judges, which was led by Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of Saint Laurent.
As the show progressed, Esber seamlessly interwove his signature style of sensual and sculptural dresses with fresh perspectives that incorporated sharp tailoring. The collection was rich with stylistic references, encompassing delicate cotton undergarments from the early 20th century, draped designs reminiscent of the 1980s that were giving the Grecian vibes which we LOVE , and the iconic leather suits from the Helmut Lang era.
Among the highlighted pieces were dresses that featured dramatic draping, anchored by large metallic motifs adorned with sea beads, alongside impeccably tailored suits crafted from leather that had been purposely scuffed to reveal an alluring gradient wash effect. Adding to the innovative flair were parachute-style dresses integrated with parka-like necklines, culminating in a stunning trio of ensembles composed of polka dot mesh and reimagined with luxurious ostrich feathers, evoking the ethereal imagery of wearable dandelions.
Overall, the spring collection designed by Esber emerged as a masterfully curated reflection on the essential equilibrium between creativity and commercial appeal, which has been pivotal in establishing his rising prominence in the fashion landscape. This collection strongly hints at exciting new frontiers for the brand as it embarks on its next chapter.
