After five years together, Shaun White and Nina Dobrev are officially taking the plunge into marriage. The Olympic snowboarder and Vampire Diaries actress announced their engagement in true seasonal style, with Nina sharing the news on Instagram with the caption, “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé 💍♾️,” adding a playful Halloween-inspired twist to the moment.

Shaun later revealed some details of the proposal to Vogue. Originally, he planned to pop the question over the summer but had to reschedule after Nina’s knee injury from a dirt biking accident. Next, he considered proposing during their trip to Cape Town in November, but Nina’s friends had guessed he might do it there, taking away the element of surprise. Finally, he decided on an intimate moment in New York City, crafting a decoy invite to a CFDA/Vogue event with Anna Wintour to keep Nina from suspecting his plan.
